Job Summary
Supervise JDS students from dismissal through pick-up, leading age-appropriate activities, games, crafts, and outdoor play while managing transitions between snack, free play, and homework time. Ensure all children are accounted for, maintain accurate attendance records, and coordinate food-allergy protocols with school files. Respond to minor injuries or behavioral situations per policy, communicate concerns to families, and support seamless transitions from the classroom. Maintain a safe, clean environment, participate in emergency drills, and foster an inclusive community across age groups. Provide a warm, professional point of contact for families during pick-up while upholding strict confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience working with school-aged children (camp, aftercare, classroom, youth programming, or similar)
- Ability to complete required background checks and any state-mandated clearances for school staff
- Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness and ability to obtain prior to start date
- Patience, warmth, and genuine enjoyment of working with school-aged children across age groups
- Strong supervision and classroom-management skills in a less-structured (after-school) setting
- Reliability and punctuality — ability to be on schedule for every aftercare shift
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with children, families, and colleagues
- Flexibility and creativity in planning and leading aftercare activities
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement of professional practice
- Able to work in a small shop with a sense of humor
- Ability to keep information in the strictest of confidence
- Proficient at working in a Microsoft Windows environment, using Office; ability to master common automated systems for record keeping, and confidently learn new technology
- Ability to talk on the phone
- Ability to stand multiple hours of the day
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
- Ability to work outside in any weather
Desired Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree, ideally in Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field
- Prior experience in aftercare, summer camp, or extended-day programming
- Experience in a Jewish day school or familiarity with Jewish life and traditions
