Aerodynamics Engineer (Starship)

Job Summary
The SpaceX Starship Aerodynamics team develops predictions of aerodynamics and aerothermal environments for booster and ship across flight regimes, interfaces with GNC and structures teams, and uses CFD, wind-tunnel testing, and scripting to support design validation. Responsibilities include preparing, meshing, running, and post-processing CFD models; reviewing post-flight data; interfacing with engineers to provide inputs to designs; writing code/scripts to enable automated workflows; and meeting ITAR-related regulatory requirements. Basic qualifications require a Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline; preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering, experience with CFD tools and data processing in MATLAB/Python, and experience with NASA/entry-vehicle solvers. Additional requirements include willingness to work extended hours/weekends and ITAR eligibility. SpaceX is an equal opportunity employer.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
- Master's degree preferred in aerospace or mechanical engineering
- Experience with lower-order, engineering-level analysis tools
- Proficiency creating watertight 3D models and CFD grids
- Running CFD on Linux/Unix systems
- Post-processing data with Tecplot or ParaView
- Experience with solvers used by NASA for entry vehicles, e.g. FUN3D, Loci/CHEM, DPLR
- Experimental testing experience
- Data processing and analysis in MATLAB or Python
- Strong background in external, compressible fluid dynamics
- Self-motivated, with strong organizational, communication and documentation skills
