Job Summary
Advanced Research Embedded Computing Engineer responsible for designing, implementing, and testing embedded software for propulsion and electromechanical systems on unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). Lead real-time control of motors and actuators, integrate software with sensors and control electronics, and develop firmware for FPGAs/SoCs/CPLDs. Collaborate on cybersecurity, work with mechanical/electrical teams, contribute to lab experiments, simulations, and demonstrations, and produce technical documentation. Must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in a related field with extensive embedded systems experience and an active DoD Secret clearance. On-site in Niskayuna, NY; US citizenship required.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s with 10+ years substituted)
- Strong foundation in embedded systems and real-time software development
- Proficiency in C and/or C++ for low-level and real-time applications
- Experience with control theory, modeling, simulation, or algorithm development
- Three years of FPGA/SoC design and development with Verilog/VHDL
- Three years of Xilinx and/or Altera tools (ModelSim, Quartus, Vivado)
- Three years of real-time embedded applications and systems on microcontrollers, FPGAs, x86, and/or ARM
- Three years of heterogeneous computer architecture and hardware acceleration
- Three years of embedded programming skills (C/C++/C#, Java, Python, MATLAB)
- Three years of Linux driver/kernel development and Yocto
- Knowledge of real-time hypervisors (VxWorks, RTS) and containers (Docker)
- Experience with RTOS (QNX, RTLinux) is a plus
- Understanding of embedded system security requirements and cybersecurity techniques
- Experience in subsea technology, acoustics, sonar, autonomous systems, Navy technologies is desirable
- Proven proposals for U.S. government agencies desirable
- Active U.S. DoD Secret clearance required (or interim)
- Experience with field-testing and prototype development
- Ability to author technical documentation and design analyses
- Collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams
