Job Summary
Assess health status, order diagnostic procedures, and formulate evidence-based plans of care for complex newborns in the NICU. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to diagnose acute and chronic conditions, manage therapeutic interventions, and communicate continuously with families. Document patient progress, transfer summaries, and discharge notes while maintaining compliance standards. Provide preceptorship to nursing staff and students, participate in grand rounds and faculty meetings, and engage in research projects to advance practice. Complete 13 months of clinical hours at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital, beginning January 1, 2027, to refine critical thinking skills within a Level IV tertiary care environment.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Less than 1 year experience
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
- Basic foundation in evidence-based practice
- Adequate medical and nursing knowledge
- Clinical/technical competence
- Sound clinical judgment
- Professional communication skills
- Timely and compliant documentation
- Ability to function in a variety of inpatient and outpatient care settings
- Completion of a specialty-relevant project
- Completion of courses through the Neonatal Program at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing
- Completion of clinical hours in the NICU at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital
- 13-month fellowship commitment
- January 1, 2027 start date
- Assessment of health status including complete history and physical examination
- Ordering and collection of diagnostic data and procedures
- Assessment of risks including medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, and diagnostic procedures
- Collaboration with interdisciplinary health care team in making accurate diagnoses
- Management of diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision
- Formulation of differential diagnoses by priority
- Diagnosis of complications and identification of appropriate interventions
- Formulation of a plan of care to address acute and complex, chronic health care needs
- Utilization of evidence-based practice guidelines or protocols in an individualized, dynamic plan of care
- Implementation and modification of plan of care
- Prescription of diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions (pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and surgical)
- Management of further diagnostic tests through ordering, performance, and interpretation
- Performance of advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation
- Maintenance of ongoing communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary health care team members
- Facilitation of communication with patient, family, and staff
- Documentation of key components of patient's progress via daily progress note, transfer, and discharge summary and/or clinic note
- Timely documentation meeting compliance standards
- Accurate capturing of patient acuity and/or complexity
- Preceptor/mentoring, education, and instruction of students and nursing staff
- Active engagement in research and analysis of evidence-based practice
- Attendance at Grand Rounds, AP Council meetings, faculty and unit meetings, MM & I presentations, and other education opportunities
- Maintenance of continuing education to maintain licensure and certification requirements
- Active participation in required professional development fellowship curriculum
- Delivery of job responsibilities impacting own job area/team with some guidance
- Use of existing procedures, research, and analysis to solve standard job-related problems requiring some judgement
- Subject matter knowledge within a professional area to meet job requirements
