Job Summary
Coordinate English language training classes for refugees and immigrants in Richmond, Virginia, by contacting students to confirm attendance, scaffolding instruction for individuals or small groups, and preparing student materials. Assist the Adult Education Specialist with enrollment, navigating client barriers such as transportation and childcare, and communicating with local stakeholders to connect students to community resources. Manage volunteer coverage for adult education and childcare roles, collect educational data, and support program growth through digital literacy initiatives. Adhere to IRC policies on confidentiality and client privacy while respecting diverse backgrounds. This unpaid internship develops critical thinking and cross-global education skills within the IRC's emergency relief and resettlement services.
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate or graduate level studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or related field preferred
- Respect and awareness of global backgrounds and experiences, and a desire to help refugees adjust to life in the U.S.
- Background in education or experience teaching formally or informally
- Patience, understanding, and flexibility
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Effective communication skills, especially in a cross-global environment
- Engaged in learning about the IRC (mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts) and willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
- Proficiency in more than one language preferred but not required (especially Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Spanish, and Kinyarwanda)
