Job Summary

Conduct English as a second language instruction for adult learners ranging from third to twelfth grade levels while maintaining effective classroom management. Prepare lesson plans incorporating critical-thinking skills, administer assessments per the staff calendar, and track student records using the ASPD system. Utilize computer-assisted instruction to promote literacy and manage instructional aids from the inventory book. Develop retention strategies with the Program Manager and attend mandatory regional trainings. Maintain a working email and submit attendance and lesson plans as outlined on the staff calendar. This temporary part-time role at Richmond Technical Center requires CASAS certification and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field
  • Experience using nontraditional teaching methods, preferably in an adult environment
  • Ability to teach at the pace of students and be able to work with students one-on-one or in large or small groups
  • Commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and English language learners
  • Self-motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site
  • Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skills range from the third grade to the twelfth grade level
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for completing lesson plan and attendance forms required
  • Working skills in the use of technology to deliver Distance Education instruction, communicate via e-mail and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner
  • CASAS and Assessment Policy certification as mandated by VDOE
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level
  • Visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data
  • Must be able to attend mandatory regional staff trainings which may include two Saturday trainings each year
  • Must maintain a working RPS email and check messages regularly
  • Must be able to use the inventory book to sign out instructional aids including classroom sets of books, laptops, workbooks, manipulatives, document camera and calculators
