Job Summary

Deliver instruction in Adult Basic Education and GED courses for learners ranging from third to twelfth grade levels. Maintain effective classroom management, prepare lesson plans incorporating critical-thinking skills, and administer assessments per the school calendar. Integrate audio-visual materials, computer-assisted instruction, and real-life applications while tracking student portfolios and attendance records. Develop retention strategies, attend mandatory regional trainings, and facilitate in-service training for staff. Manage instructional aids inventory and utilize technology to teach basic computer literacy. Submit lesson plans and attendance data as outlined on the school calendar.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field
  • Experience using nontraditional teaching methods, preferably in an adult environment
  • Ability to teach at the pace of students and be able to work with students one-on-one or in large or small groups
  • Commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and Adult Basic Education learners
  • Self-motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site
  • Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skills range from the third grade to the twelfth grade level
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for completing lesson plan and attendance forms required
  • Working skills in the use of technology to deliver Distance Education instruction, communicate via e-mail and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner
  • CASAS and Assessment Policy certification as mandated by VDOE
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level
  • Visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data
  • Must attend mandatory regional staff trainings which may include two Saturday trainings each year
  • Must maintain a working RPS email and check messages regularly
  • Must submit attendance and lesson plans as outlined on the staff calendar
  • Must maintain attendance and other student records and track hours of instruction using the ASPD and other forms
  • Must develop and implement retention strategies and share these with HSE Specialist
  • Must facilitate in-service training for other staff when appropriate
  • Must possess a current resume, transcript and license if applicable
  • Must provide three references names and contact information
  • Must pass background investigation, fingerprinting, and tuberculosis screening
