Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher

To assist students in achieving IEP goals that will develop the motor skills necessary for appropriate development. The APE Teacher provides instruction that integrates several aspects of movement and motor functioning, aligned with Louisiana state guidelines. Responsibilities include meeting standards of performance set by the Orleans Parish Public School Board and applicable guidelines; guiding individualized goals across academics, social, communication, motor, vocational, and self-help areas; developing and maintaining IEPs and progress reports; conducting daily activities aligned with IEP goals; utilizing varied techniques and materials; maintaining classroom management and positive behavior supports; planning instruction pacing; communicating progress to parents; coordinating with paraprofessionals and participating in multi-disciplinary teams as applicable; developing physical education curriculum tailored to exceptional needs, and meeting reporting deadlines. Required skills include strong communication, classroom management, organizational abilities, collaboration with families and professionals, and a Louisiana teaching certification with a Bachelor’s degree. Desirable experience includes behavior analysis and intervention; the role emphasizes instructional planning, record-keeping, and facilitating extracurricular PE for students with exceptionalities.
