Job Summary
Acoustic Warfare Capability Advisor sought for Thales Australia in Rockingham. Primary duties include representing Thales in meetings with the Royal Australian Navy on sonar system performance and operational issues, gathering feedback from RAN stakeholders, contributing to design and documentation for submarine and surface ship sonar upgrades, developing and delivering training materials for sonar operators and support teams, assisting with maintenance and troubleshooting of sonar systems, and influencing engineering and system-improvement decisions through operational experience and stakeholder input. Requires extensive submarine sonar expertise, experience with towed arrays and naval sonar platforms, strong stakeholder engagement, and ability to support bids and validation strategies. Defence clearance is required for this role, with eligibility to obtain and maintain an appropriate Australian Government clearance. Willingness to work in a security-conscious defence environment and engage with end users in Navy/industry contexts is essential.
Required Qualifications
- Qualified Acoustic Warfare Analyst (AWA) or equivalent qualifications
- Minimum 10 years’ experience as a submariner with a specialisation in sonar
- Extensive experience in sonar operations on USN/RAN/RN submarines
- Expertise in towed array operation/analysis (2076/2087/SHORT-TAS preferred)
- Deep warfare, acoustic intelligence, and acoustic warfare expertise
- Advanced competence in oceanography/hydrography (e.g., use of acoustic prediction tools)
- Highly skilled in broadband/narrowband analysis and operation of spectral analysis tools on military sonar platforms
- Strong influencing and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience engaging with senior leaders in Navy/industry
- Technical knowledge of submarine and surface ship sonar systems is desirable
- Understanding of complex, real-time military systems/solutions is desirable
