Job Summary
Accounting Services — Payroll Specialist will provide accurate accounting duties to ensure effective fiscal operations with a focus on payroll processing for Central Office employees. Responsibilities include maintaining Timekeeper timesheets for Central Office staff, editing and verifying payroll data, calculating and reviewing salaries and deductions, processing payroll deductions (e.g., garnishments, United Way, and other organizations), preparing W-2 forms and local supplements, generating required payroll reports for submission to external agencies, setting up payroll calendars and accounts, and assisting with setup of new employees and final payouts. The role requires handling multiple duties, excellent communication with employees and external entities, confidentiality, and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google products, Education Management System, and SchoolFunds (preferred). Occasional overtime beyond 40 hours may be required. Reports to: Director of Fiscal Services/Finance Officer; Location: Tarboro, NC. Salary is per Edgecombe County Public Schools Classified Salary Schedule; Terms: 12 months/8 hours per day, or as needed; Evaluation: Annually. Prioritize accuracy in payroll payments and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Minimum of five (5) years work-related experience
- Knowledge and understanding of accounting practices, financial operations, programs, fund accounting, payroll preparation, deductions and reporting requirements
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and policies governing school payroll and benefits
- Knowledge of policies and procedures for calculating timesheets, benefits, supplements, and twelve-month installment
- Ability to prepare, read, and comprehend a variety of job related forms and reports
- Ability to communicate with all employees by explaining and answering questions and to communicate with banks and other companies
- Analytical and logic skills to determine when a deduction or payroll does not balance, whether or not payroll calculations are correct, and how to correct error
- Ability to calculate pay for hourly employee
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive payroll issues
- Ability to handle multiple responsibilities at the same time and meet required deadline
- Extensive knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office and Google products required; Education Management System and SchoolFunds experience, preferred
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and use data, operate a computer, office calculator, and other office equipment
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Ability to work additional hours beyond 40 hours in the week if the work load requires
