Job Summary
Accountant in city finance department responsible for budgeting, cost control, financial reporting, payroll, and A/P/A/R processing, including journal entries and general ledger close. Supports budgeting and financial planning, prepares financial reports and notes to statements, ensures internal controls and compliance, liaises with external auditors, and communicates financial information to department directors and the public. Requires thorough knowledge of double-entry accounting, ability to analyze program details, maintain confidentiality, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively. Public-sector role emphasizing customer service and cross-functional collaboration; positions may include preparation of annual budgets, cost monitoring, and revenue/expenditure reconciliation. Proficiency with accounting systems and willingness to support various financial procedures and reports is essential.
Required Qualifications
- Accountant 1 requires an associate’s degree in accounting, business, finance or related field and 0-5 years of accounting experience
- Accountant 2 requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance or related field and 5-10 years of accounting experience
- Accountant 3 requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance or related field; a master’s degree counts towards 2 years of experience; and over 10 years of accounting experience
