Job Summary
Academic Advisor & Student Success Specialist provides proactive, developmental advising to undeclared students and outreach to new and continuing students to promote student persistence and success. Responsibilities include student advising (course registration and planning, interpreting academic policy, advocating for students), student success coaching to develop effective learning strategies and college transition skills, managing the university-wide retention alert system, and creating programming to foster engagement and belonging. The role supports students on academic probation, helps identify at-risk students, and collaborates with faculty and staff to improve retention and graduation rates. Occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required; familiarity with NACADA, FERPA, ADA, and Title IX is expected, along with the ability to analyze retention data and provide data-driven recommendations. The position involves teaching four credits per year in the FYE program, coordinating orientation activities, and participating in university events. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work with diverse student populations and maintain timely data entry in university systems.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education, psychology, counseling, student development, or related field required
- 1-3 years experience in academic advising, academic support, teaching, or counseling at the post-secondary level
- Experience working with students in graduate and undergraduate programs, and in traditional, accelerated, and online degree formats preferred
- Understanding of university structures and policies
- Excellent organizational skills
- Effective and clear communication skills, including written, oral, interpersonal, and group skills
- Understanding of student development theory and academic advising research and practices, especially for exploratory undergraduate students
- Commitment to student retention and persistence
- Strong computer skills
- Must be proficient in Microsoft-office suite and student database management systems
- Must have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills both in-person and via email/telephone communication
