Job Summary
Conduct watch duties on the wheel, anchor, and gangway while maintaining a steady course and executing rudder orders. Perform general maintenance, repair, and sanitation of deck department areas, equipment, and the ship's hull, decks, superstructure, and emergency gear. Execute security inspections, launch lifesaving equipment, and learn the location and use of damage control systems. Maintain alertness during roving watches and complete assigned tasks including chipping, scraping, soundings, and painting.
Required Qualifications
- High School graduation or any equivalent combination of training and experience
- Previous experiences onboard ocean/Inland vessels
- Active AB Special license or greater
- U.S. Coast Guard approved Adult CPR
- Basic First Aid (must have been within the last 12 months)
- Current CPR
- TWIC Qualified
- Lifeboat man
- STCW with RFPNW endorsement
- Current USCG Medical Certification
- Passport
- Ability to lift moderately heavy objects and exert moderate force
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
- Ability to work in various temperatures, indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain and dry environmental conditions
- Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment
- Participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol
- Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training cruises aboard the training ship
- Present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston
- Must be able to work in close spaces
- Requires the ability to step through hatches
- Requires the ability to climb ladders
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge & skills required to maintain a training & maintenance program for deck cadets on the training ship under the supervision of the Boatswain, Deck Mate & Chief Mate
- KSA to operate a ship deck department maintenance program
- Knowledge of watch standing principals
