Job Summary

Assist 911 call takers and supervisors in identifying behavioral health calls for transfer to the 988 team while de-escalating callers and assessing safety via police or EMS response. Provide crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and brief supportive counseling to callers transferred from 911 who are in emotional distress. Conduct safety assessments according to agency policies, funding requirements, and national 988 Best Practices, utilizing the CAD system to coordinate with dispatch and document all interactions. Operate within legal requirements including HIPAA confidentiality and mandated reporting protocols. Collaborate with remote behavioral health staff via Microsoft Teams and mentor new employees. This full-time, hourly role is located at the South Sound 911 center in Tacoma, WA.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or related field
  • Ability to obtain necessary security clearance for accessing the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and working on-site at the 911 center
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration
  • In-person work on site at South Sound 911 in Tacoma, WA
  • Knowledge of Motivational interviewing techniques
  • Effective use of empathy
  • Active Listening skills
  • Efficiency with information-gathering and problem-solving
  • Superior communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years of experience in a healthcare contact center and/or in mental health counseling
  • Experience assessing suicide risk and safety planning
