Job Summary
Student Services Assistant (SSA) supports students with diverse learning needs in general and special education settings under certified staff direction. Responsibilities include academic reinforcement, implementing instructional accommodations/modifications, data collection, behavior support, de-escalation, and classroom supervision. In high school/transition program settings, SSAs may serve as job coaches, helping students learn job-related tasks and workplace skills, while ensuring safety and adherence to schedules and employer expectations. The role involves collaboration with teachers, related service providers, and other paraprofessionals, plus potential participation in crisis response or CPI strategies as part of a team. Physical activities include assisting students with mobility, supervision during lunch/recess/bus duty, and occasional outdoor supervision. Training in confidentiality and professional responsibilities is required; additional delegated care aid training is available as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Illinois Paraprofessional License (or proof of application)
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public
- Proficient in written and spoken English for communication and instructional support
- Patience and strong interpersonal skills to work with diverse student needs
- Ability to assist in the implementation of instructional programs, behavior plans, and data collection
- Basic understanding of assistive technology, instructional accommodations, and modifications
- CP I (Crisis Prevention Intervention) and CPR training preferred
