Job Summary
Part-time Para Educator/Math Teacher in Somerville, MA, responsible for teaching math to approximately 20-25 adult students working toward the ParaPro credential, collaborating with the Reading/Writing Teacher and Program Director to plan and implement curriculum, preparing monthly lesson plans, collecting attendance and documenting student progress, and assisting with DESE-related activities. Requires experience teaching math to adult learners, training in explicit math strategies, and a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred). Responsibilities include weekly planning meetings, evaluating student progress, and integrating digital literacy (Aztec software) into instruction within the framework of MA DESE standards. Position is part-time, August–June, with duties aligned to the Somerville Educator’s Union contract; CORI clearance and fingerprints required. The employer emphasizes collaboration with program administrators and adherence to DESE policies, including attendance and assessment-related tasks, substitutes, and staff meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience – at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants
- Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus
- MAPT certification is preferred but not required for this position
- Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities
