Job Summary
The Somerville Public School System is seeking an ABE Math Teacher for a part-time role (2 mornings per week) to raise Math levels of a class of approximately 15–20 adult students working toward a high school equivalency credential. Responsibilities include preparing monthly lesson plans, collaborating with the Reading/Writing Teacher to support the Para Educator curriculum, attending staff and department meetings, evaluating student progress, maintaining attendance and assessment records, and assisting with DESE-related activities. The role involves implementing the department’s curriculum guidelines, integrating digital literacy, and coordinating with the Director and Program Administrator on program issues. Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of ABE classroom teaching experience with adult immigrants; MA DESE standards familiarity and teaching strategy expertise; state credentialing is a plus; MAPT certification preferred but not required. Prior experience with attendance tracking, curriculum planning, and collaboration across education teams is essential.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience – at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants
- Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches
- Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus
- MAPT certification is preferred but not required for this position
