Job Summary
Assist the Lead Counselor in directing elementary-aged children through daily enrichment lessons, homework support, and health & wellness activities. Prepare and implement daily programs while maintaining site safety, cleanliness, and equipment standards. Supervise the classroom and group dynamics, fostering positive rapport with youth to model relationship-building skills. Maintain thorough knowledge of Virginia licensing standards and ensure compliance at all times. Provide ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers regarding their child's needs and progress. Work Monday through Friday from 1:45pm to 5:30pm at Charlottesville elementary schools. This role supports the YMCA's focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
Required Qualifications
- At least 16 years of age
- Must pass background check
- Receive negative TB result
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- First Aid & CPR certifications within the first 30 days
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the licensing standards set forth by the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Maintain compliance with licensing standards
- Ability to plan, lead, and implement indoor and outdoor activities
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time
- Work between 1:45pm-5:30pm, Monday-Friday
- Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness
- Support Lead Counselors in supervising the children, classroom, and all activities
- Maintain program site and equipment
- Create a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth
- Model relationship-building skills in all interactions
- Provide and welcome ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers about their child's needs and progress
- Connect families to the Y
- Attend and participate in all program activities and team meetings
- Adhere to the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
- Participation in required in-service training (24 hours) annually
- Completion of all required trainings prior to start date
