Job Summary

Screen prospective residents for suitability, assess needs and risks, and orient new clients to available services. Provide emotional support, define action plans, and conduct short-term group or individual counselling sessions using active listening and conflict resolution techniques. Plan and facilitate support groups in the shelter and community while delivering life-skills training. Liaise with community service providers regarding legal, medical, and housing assistance, and advocate for client interests with other professionals. Maintain accurate client records, staff logs, and statistics, and participate in case management meetings to report progress. Work as part of a team to manage household operations, document safety and maintenance issues, and rotate on a backup schedule. Orient and assign duties to volunteers and practicum students. This role supports an essential service addressing intimate partner abuse and violence for residents at Victoria and Westshore locations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social work or a related field in human services
  • minimum of one-year recent related work in similar environment
  • equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector
  • demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs
  • Bona fide occupational requirement for self-identified women and non-binary candidates
  • union membership
  • satisfactory completion of a criminal records search

  • Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Well-developed interpersonal, counselling, oral and written communication skills
  • Good organization, time and general management skills
  • Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques
  • Ability to work effectively with other program staff, therapists, social workers, and other related personnel
