Job Summary
Paraeducator (Special Education) provides instructional and support for students with special needs, working 3.25 hours/day, 5 days/week across the school year. Responsibilities include assisting teachers with assessment and curriculum implementation, supporting student interactions and social growth in classrooms and small groups, providing daily living skills instruction, health-related support (including potential medical assistance under supervision), behavior management and safety, supervision during transitions, and documentation such as progress reports. The role emphasizes collaboration with certificated staff, respectful communication with students and families, adherence to policies (FERPA, IDEA, Section 504), and ability to adapt to changing tasks in a diverse school environment. The position may involve 1:1 or small group support, supervision during recess/bus, and clerical assistance as needed. This is a union, part-time paraeducator role located in Lacey, WA, within North Thurston Public Schools.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits of college courses numbered 100 or above OR the ETS Para Pro test
- May be required to be certified in first aid, CPR, and/or operation of defibrillators
- May be required to be trained in instructional methodologies in reading, writing, mathematics, and special education areas such as student restraint, safety, medication
- Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities
- Able to report to work with regular attendance and punctuality
- Be or become knowledgeable and supportive of classroom management and student discipline procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Skill in the use of office and computer equipment and student information system software
- Able to organize work and set priorities
- Able to protect confidentiality of student information (FERPA)
- Able to work collaboratively with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members
- Two years of experience with children in a learning environment (preferred)
- Bilingual skills (preferred)
- Familiarity with inclusive strategies for students with disabilities (preferred)
