Job Summary
Paraeducator (Special Education) at North Thurston School District with a 6.5-hour day, supporting instructional activities and student supervision in collaboration with teachers across diverse learners. Responsibilities include assisting with assessment, curriculum implementation, in-class and one-on-one support, enforcing safe behaviors and social development, providing health-related assistance (including basic medical tasks as authorized), teaching independent living skills, implementing behavior management plans, facilitating transportation to and from activities, and maintaining confidential communication with families and staff. The role emphasizes culturally diverse engagement, adherence to district policies and procedures, and proactive, organized instructional support across learning environments.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits or Para Pro test or ETS ParaPro
- May be required to be certified in first aid, CPR, and/or operation of defibrillators
- May be required training in instructional methodologies in reading, writing, mathematics, and special education areas such as student restraint, safety, medication
- Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities
- Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities
- Ability to assist, console, and manage students who may be emotional
- Ability to follow written and verbal direction and take initiative
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Knowledgeable of classroom management and student discipline procedures
- Strong English language skills
- Organizational skills and prioritization
- Confidentiality per FERPA
- Collaborative with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community
- Office equipment and software proficiency
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Experience with student information systems
- Ability to travel in school-owned/leased vehicles if required
- Physical ability to lift/move 25-50 pounds
- Ability to work in varied environments and weather conditions
