Job Summary
Paraeducator (Special Education) at Olympic View Elementary under HSLS/HiSEL/SCALS/VOICE programs. Supports instruction and supervision of students with special needs in various settings, including one-on-one and small-group contexts. Responsibilities include assisting teachers with assessment, curriculum implementation, enforcing safe behaviors, and fostering social development; providing daily living support (eating, dressing, toileting); health-related assistance (colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings, and medications as authorized); facilitating independent living skills (cooking, laundry, hygiene); implementing physical/occupational therapy plans; safeguarding student safety during transitions and recess; communicating with students, parents, and community members; maintaining confidential student information per FERPA; documenting behavior and progress; performing light clerical duties; and supporting behavior management plans under certificated staff guidance. Strong emphasis on working with diverse families and communities, adhering to school/district policies, and staying attentive to student needs and safety. This is a part-time, union position in North Thurston Public Schools in Washington state, with benefits eligibility for eligible hours.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits OR ParaPro test
- May be required to be certified in first aid, CPR, and/or defibrillators
- May be required to be trained in instructional methodologies and in special education areas such as student restraint, safety, medication, etc.
- Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or demonstrated commitment to engaging diverse populations
- Able to work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities
- Able to assist, console, and manage students who may be emotional or distressed
- Able to remain calm and focused when engaging with various stakeholders
- Able to follow written and verbal directions and seek clarity when needed
- Regular and reliable attendance
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Skill in using office and computer equipment and student information system software
- Ability to lift/move 25-50 pounds and assist with restraining students when required
- Ability to travel in school-owned or leased vehicles (as needed)
- Work environment with rotating duties and potential exposure to illness, bodily fluids, and challenging behavior
