Job Summary
Paraeducator in a Washington public school supports instruction and supervision of students with special needs. Responsibilities include assisting teachers with assessment, curriculum implementation, and student interactions; providing support for activities of daily living and health-related tasks (including potential colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings, and medication administration as authorized by the nurse); teaching independent living skills; implementing physical and occupational therapy plans; transporting or supervising students during recess, bus, and transitions; maintaining student confidentiality; monitoring behavior using specified plans; communicating with students, families, and staff; and performing limited clerical duties as needed. Requires collaboration with certificated staff, adherence to IDEA/Section 504 policies, and the ability to work with diverse populations. Position is 5.5 hours/day, 5 days/week, 189 days/year, and classified as a union paraeducator role in a non-exempt, part-time capacity.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits of college courses numbered 100 or above OR the ETS Para Pro test
- First aid/CPR and/or defibrillator operation certification may be required
- Training in instructional methodologies or special education areas may be required
- Successful experience with culturally diverse populations or demonstrated commitment to engaging diverse communities
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment with interruptions and changing priorities
- Ability to support students with emotional or behavioral challenges
- Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and maintain attendance and punctuality
- Knowledge of classroom management and discipline procedures
- Strong English language skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to organize work and set priorities
- Ability to protect confidentiality of student information (FERPA)
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, families, and community
- Proficiency with office and computer equipment and student information systems
