Job Summary
Paraeducator performs instructional and support duties to assist teachers and students with special needs in classrooms, including one-on-one or small-group work. Responsibilities include assisting with daily tasks (eating, dressing, toileting), health-related supports administered under supervision (possible colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings, medication administration as authorized), teaching independent living skills, implementing physical and occupational therapy plans, supervising students during recess, bus duty, or transitions, and ensuring student safety. The role requires collaboration with teachers and staff, ongoing communication with families and communities, maintaining confidentiality, supporting behavioral and learning goals with visual supports and modifications, and providing tutoring and instructional support in various settings. The position emphasizes culturally diverse engagement, effective communication, and adherence to district policies, procedures, and FERPA requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits OR ETS ParaPro test
- May be required to be certified in first aid, CPR, and/or operation of defibrillators
- May be trained in instructional methodologies in reading, writing, mathematics, and in special education areas such as student restraint and safety
- Successful experience working with culturally diverse families and communities or demonstrated commitment to engaging diverse populations
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions, maintain attendance, and work with regularity and punctuality
- Knowledgeable about classroom management and student discipline procedures
- Strong English language proficiency (speaking, spelling, syntax)
- Ability to organize work, set priorities, and protect confidentiality (FERPA)
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members
- Skill in using office equipment and student information software
