Job Summary
Provide appropriate communication between hearing-impaired students and hearing personnel using sign language, finger-spelling, or voicing. Facilitate tutoring, note-taking, and test reading while preparing lesson content, vocabulary, and handouts in advance. Participate in educational team meetings to review IEPs and aid staff in understanding the distinct culture of the deaf community. Maintain student confidentiality per FERPA regulations and adhere to the National Association of Interpreters in Education Code of Professional Conduct. Interpret at a normal conversational rate with students and parents utilizing American Sign Language.
Required Qualifications
- The ability to interpret/transliterate at a normal conversational rate where students with hearing impairments or parents are present utilizing American Sign Language
- The interpreter must be registered with the Oklahoma State Department of Education educational interpreter registry
- QAST 3 or above or EIPA 3.5 or above or National certification
- Interpreter must meet 10 hours of CEU every year-5 hours of education related and 1 hour of Ethics
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
- Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move up or more than 10 pounds
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to or more than 50 pounds
