Job Summary
The Counselor will develop and implement a comprehensive school-level guidance program based on the American School Counseling Association National Standards and focused on the physical, social, intellectual, emotional and vocational growth of each student. The counselor will coordinate activities in the guidance and counseling program, provide information and facilitate guidance activities for students, staff and parents, serve as a resource to the school and community, provide individual and group counseling, uphold professional standards, determine priorities, evaluate the program, collaborate with administration, integrate the guidance program within the total school program, communicate with parents and community about services, establish and maintain community resources, assist in understanding personal and social development, facilitate small groups and presentations on pertinent issues, provide prevention strategies addressing issues such as chemical dependency, teenage pregnancy, suicide, dropout, and various forms of abuse, conduct education and career-themed activities, conduct orientation/training for students, parents and staff, interpret test results, provide mediation and behavior support, support staff in positive student rapport, assist teachers in identifying students who would benefit from counseling and provide feedback on referred students, provide information to aid understanding of educational goals, supply resource materials and expertise on issues affecting students, staff and family, provide crisis intervention, apply appropriate interventions for student well-being, make referrals to community resources, meet state competency standards and licensure requirements, participate in policy development for guidance and counseling, stay informed on developments in the profession, follow ethical standards, supervise designated extracurricular activities, participate in district meetings, manage and facilitate the SAT process, support district initiatives, and accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the principal.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in school counseling, guidance & counseling, psychology, sociology, or a related field
- Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure under pathways outlined by New Mexico for school counselors (PATHWAY 1: Bachelors and Master's degree with practicum and NMTA CK A; PATHWAY 2: LPC or LPCC license with applicable graduate hours and NMTA CK A; PATHWAY 3: NBCC certificate and NMTA CK A)
- Two years of responsible counseling experience; one year of career counseling desirable
