Job Summary
Perform steel and aluminum structural work in the repair and modernization of marine vessels with minimal supervision. Read and interpret structural drawings, blueprints, and NavSea/Navy damage control diagrams; fabricate templates, square plates, and install perpendiculars on ships per drawings or specifications. Operate welding processes SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW; use oxy-acetylene torch and Plasma for cutting/washing; employ hand and power tools safely; follow OSHA PPE requirements; document material condition and recommend corrective actions in CFRs. Communicate effectively with structural supervisor and small groups. Must be physically and medically capable of wearing required PPE and working in a shipyard environment.
Required Qualifications
- Five (5) years of related experience.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols) and NavSea standard items.
- Experience fabricating templates, squaring plates, scribing in structures, and installing perpendiculars on ships in accordance with drawings, specifications, or sketches.
- Welding experience: SMAW (S-11A) (fillet) FCAW (S-1) (fillet) GMAW (S-25) (fillet)
- Ability to write CFRs describing material condition and recommended corrective action
- Ability to communicate job-related information to supervisor and small groups
- Understand OSHA standards and proper PPE usage
- Proficiency in US customary and metric measurement systems
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic and measurements
- Experience with oxy-acetylene torch and Plasma cutting/washing
- Ability to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence
