Job Summary
Safely construct, replace, repair, and perform maintenance of electric distribution lines, structures, and equipment, including installing and disconnecting meters and transformers. Investigate trouble on lines to locate power outage causes and conduct line patrols to report maintenance needs. Operate heavy equipment such as line trucks, boom trucks, trenchers, and digger trucks while setting up traffic control barricades. Provide training and supervision to apprentices when the Foreman or Lead Lineman is absent. Report to work within 20 minutes of notification for stand-by or additional services. Work in a field environment under all weather conditions with potential overtime during heavy workloads.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, or equivalent
- Successful completion of DOL program requirements for Journeyman Lineman
- Completion of advanced lineman training/lineman certification
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Eight to ten years experience in electric utility distribution operations, including distribution system construction and maintenance
- Knowledge of RUS line specifications
- Knowledge of National Electric Code
- Knowledge of National Electric Safety Code
- Knowledge of OSHA Rules and Regulations
- Prior experience in basic technical utility knowledge
- Valid Texas CDL (class A) license with a good driving record or be able to obtain within 90 days
- Ability to communicate in English, both in written and oral forms with the general public and co-workers
- Ability to climb poles of all types and perform required jobs while on poles
- Skills and abilities to perform all required jobs with the installation of materials, apparatus, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution lines
- Ability to operate equipment including bucket trucks, digger trucks, and other related equipment
- Ability to proficiently operate all electronic devices issued to employee including, but not limited to iPad and computer
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more, as necessary without external assistance from personnel or mechanical aids
- Sight to be able to see working conditions from a safety standpoint
- Ability to effectively utilize a two-way radio to communicate duties and location
- Ability to walk distances up to one mile in uneven terrain
- Willingness to work in all adverse and inclement weather conditions, including help with service restoration during storms
- Willingness to work overtime at times of heavy workload
- Must be able to report to work within 20 minutes of being notified that services are required when performing stand-by duties or when additional services are required
- Willingness to work in a field environment
- Willingness to perform extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting in awkward positions
- Must be able to operate vehicles and heavy equipment including line trucks, boom trucks, underground trencher, and digger truck, and other associated equipment in a safe and proficient manner
- Must be able to set up and remove barricades, flags, and signs for traffic control and work zone protection is in compliance with safety procedures at all job sites
- Must be able to operate and maintain transportation equipment, tools, and working equipment is in proper condition, and reports deficiencies or repairs needed
- Must be able to ensure all tools, equipment, and unused materials are returned and replaced on vehicles after the completion of a job or the day's work
- Must demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
- Must be able to provide training and supervision to other members of line crew, especially in the absence of the Foreman and Lead Lineman
- Must be able to demonstrate mastery and continue duties of Apprentice 1, 2, 3 and 4
